Microsoft's disclosure of your strategy around Windows 10 S ended up being ... chaotic. (I'm being nice.)
On March 7, officials blogged about a number of the coming changes around Windows 10 S, that have been leaking out within the last several months.
Simple refresher: Windows 10 S is actually a "mode" of Windows 10 , regardless of whether Microsoft execs initially positioned turning into a new edition of Windows 10 the mulch can become was introduced this past year. But we discovered soon enough that the real name using the original version of Windows 10 S was "Windows 10 Pro in S Mode." And later, we learned there'd be other "S modes" of Windows 10, for example , Windows 10 Enterprise in S Mode.
The significance proposition of Windows 10 S is it will boot faster, much more secure (since it only allows app installation by means of Store), offer better life cycle of battery and be less vunerable to bit rot.
On March 7, Microsoft Corporate V . p . Joe Belfiore officially confirmed that Windows 10 in S Mode are "coming soon" to all editions of Windows 10. (Yesterday, Belfiore tweeted that's Mode could well be coming "next year.")
Next he said in tonight's post that moving from Windows 10 S to the fully-featured complementary form of Windows 10 would be offered "at no charge, regardless of edition."
It's a departure from Microsoft's previous means of charging users $49 to convert from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro. Microsoft planned to crank up charging users by April 1, 2018, to modify from S to Pro.
Belfiore acknowledged that Microsoft's naming of Windows 10 S mode "was a touch confusing either way customers and partners."
He was quoted saying that "starting on the next update to Windows 10" -- during which I assume he means Windows 10 "Redstone 4," a k a 1803, -- "customers can opt to buy a totally new Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 pro PC with S Mode enabled, and commercial customers may deploy Windows 10 Enterprise with S mode enabled."
Microsoft disclosed the inclusion of Windows 10 Enterprise in S Mode during its Ignite conference in September 2017.
